Emigrating Case study Emigrating

Darren & Paula Meer Emigrating to New Zealand

1. Decision to emigrate
We, the wife (Paula) and i, moved to Nelson New Zealand in October 2007. We were looking for something different and I was certainly ready for a change after working for 20 years as a teacher in the UK. Paula is an occupational therapist and we obtained our residency visas by securing work for Paula before we left the UK.
2. Advice for others
For anyone considering a move to NZ, the government's own immigration website is an excellent source of information. Also when we told friends about our plans we were very surprised at the number of people who knew someone who had already made the move, these people became a good source of information. It is possible to employ an agent but we did it all ourselves, saving a lot of money, but also allowing us to be in control. There was nothing that we found too hard and we were not tied to particular services and agents etc. It meant that we were free to choose who to exchange our currency with.
3. The money transfer
We considered banks and exchange specialists but were unsure on which route to take. I was on a website forum and starting asking people their recommendation on the choice available. When I started a thread about moving money between countries I had a number of replies, one of which recommended No1 Currency. As soon as we put our UK house on the market i watched and graphed the Xchange rates on a daily basis. This went on for about 12 months and we saw some big fluctuations. We knew then that we wanted to be able to transfer money quickly when the rate was right for us. When the time was right No1 Currency were able to respond instantly and agree a rate on the phone. Job done!
4. How No1 Currency Business Helped
The best parts of using No1 Currency for us were several fold. When I rang No1 Currency I could speak to a named person and contact the same person each time. No big anonymous bank call up centres. Secondly No1 took time to explain how the 'system' worked, were very patient and answered all of our questions in a clear but detailed way that was easy to understand. We never felt pressured about how much to exchange or when to exchange. All costs and services were very transparent. We were moving our entire life savings so it was very reassuring to know that this aspect of our emigration was being dealt with professionally. It also took a lot of stress off all of the other things that we had to do, move out, arrange a container, passport, flight and visa arrangements etc.
We have and will continue to recommend No1 Currency.

As soon as we started planning the move last March, I began to consider the implications. The best financial advice I can offer anyone is to look at the market and remember that you do have an alternative to the high street banks.

Overall, No1 Currency saved me a significant amount of money - especially in comparison with the high street banks - in terms of charges and foreign exchange rates.
