The Jamaican dollar (JMD) has been the currency of Jamaica since 1969 and is commonly referred to as ‘the Jay’ by locals. The Jamaican Dollar ($1) is made up of 100 cents. You’ll often see it written as J$ or JA$ to distinguish it from other dollar currencies.
US dollars are widely accepted in the Caribbean islands. If you’re going island hopping, it can be handy to have some US dollars on you. Although, we recommend using Jamaican dollars as it usually works out cheaper with the exchange rate.
